District report card shows improvements in Fairborn

FAIRBORN — Fairborn City Schools showed improvement in graduation rate, progress, early literacy, and gap closing on the 2023-2024 report card released by the Ohio Department of Education.

On a 1-5 star rating system, Fairborn City Schools received a four stars for its overall rating, half a star better than last year.

“I am very proud of our staff and Dr. Brackenhoff for her leadership with curriculum and instruction,” said Fairborn City Schools Superintendent Gene Lolli. “The district is focused on academic excellence and the four-star rating is commendable. We are setting the bar high and will continue to look at data and academic supports for our students.”

Out of five categories analyzed by the Ohio Department of Education for the annual report, Fairborn improved on four. It maintained the previous year’s score on the Achievement Component Rating, which represents whether a student’s performance on state tests met established thresholds, as well as overall test performance. Like last year, Fairborn received three stars.

For Graduation Rate category, which measures the four-year adjusted graduation rate as well as the five-year rate, Fairborn received a three-star rating, which increased from last year’s two stars.

The Early Literacy component also received three stars after receiving two stars last year. The Early Literacy category measures reading improvement and proficiency for kindergarten through third-grade students.

Fairborn’s Progress Component rating was four stars, the same as last year. This rating looks at the growth of all students based on their past performance.

The highlight of this year’s report card was in the Gap Closing Component, in which the Fairborn School District earned five stars. Last year, the district earned a four-star rating. Gap Closing measures the reduction in educational gaps for student subgroups. Five stars is the highest rating handed out by the Ohio Department of Education and is reserved for excellent performance in each category.

“On behalf of the board of education, I am very excited to see that our hard work and commitment to academics is gaining results,” said Fairborn Board of Education President Jerry Browning. “Thank you to Dr. Brackenhoff and our dedicated and committed staff for your work with our students.”
