Air Force museum to open new exhibit

FAIRBORN — The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force will be holding a special ceremony to honor the work of the Civil Air Patrol on September 11 in preparation for a new exhibit.

Following the terrorist attack on 9/11, a Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Cessna 172 provided emergency management officials with the first high-resolution images of the World Trade Center. CAP volunteers also transported blood and medical supplies to support state and federal officials during the emergency. On Sept. 12, the Cessna was the only non-military aircraft permitted in the nation’s airspace.

The CAP Cessna that aided on Sept. 12 after the attack is currently on display in the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, and a new exhibit from the CAP’s support is set to open soon.

The ceremony honoring the work of the CAP following 9/11 will begin at 6 p.m.

Registration is required to attend the event, and can be found online at nationalmuseum.af.mil/upcoming/events/. The event is free to attend, but space is limited.

The ceremony will be held in Building 3 of the museum, with a reception and cash bar available at 6:30 p.m. The event will run until the museum closes at 8 p.m.
