ENON — Enon residents will soon see crews working on a number of roads in the village.
In a unanimous vote Tuesday, June 23, council members approved three emergency resolutions regarding the resurfacing of two streets that have been plagued by potholes and the annual resurfacing of another stretch of road.
The first part of the street repaving plan involves the resurfacing of Bobwhite Drive in the Houck Meadows subdivision and a section of Brunswick Drive which lies between Matthews Drive and Rebert Pike. Village officials have contracted Clark County to complete the road improvements for a maximum amount of $40,645.76.
The village will also provide a local match of $10,645, along with a county match of $389,355, to resurface eight miles of Fairfield Pike from Springfield-Xenia Road to Hunter Road, after the Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC) approved a $400,000 grant for the project. According to Ross, approximately 900 feet of Fairfield Pike lies within the corporation limits of the village. Work crews will also waterproof the bridge on Fairfield Pike.
“We are having the county pave Fairfield Pike at Houck Meadows in conjunction with their Fairfield Pike paving project, and the village will also cover pavement markings for Fairfield Pike,” Enon Village Administrator Ben Ross said.
County officials have awarded the contracts for both projects to A & B Asphalt Corporation in Springfield.
In other business, Enon Police Chief Lewis Wilcox reported that Enon’s first pizza festival, which was held on June 13, was a big success. He noted that more than 2,000 people attended the one-day event, which netted $375 in proceeds that will benefit the police department’s annual “Shop with a Cop” program.
Wilcox said trophies were awarded to three pizzerias, including best cheese pizza to Bada Bing Pizza, best gourmet pizza to Joe Catanzaro’s Pizza, and best deluxe and most unique pizzas to Classic Chicken & Pizza.
The police chief expressed his appreciation to all of the vendors, Enon VFW, Greenon Local School District, Mad River Township Fire and EMS, Marti Ventolo, James Kinnamon, Martha Pyles, Tim and Jessie DeVore, Ken Hensley, Bob Whitaker, and anyone that he may have missed for their help and support during the pizza festival.
Wilcox also stated that the first family night event, which was scheduled for Sunday, June 28, has been cancelled. However, the remaining village-sponsored events are still slated throughout the summer.
The police chief reported that the new police cruiser is in operation, and new lighter-weight uniforms have been ordered for village police officers. All village police officers are also wearing black bands across their badges in honor of Cincinnati Police Officer Sonny Kim who was killed in the line of duty on Friday, June. Wilcox said the flag at the Enon Government Center was also lowered to half-mast.
Council unanimously approved a $2,000 donation to the Enon VFW Post to help purchase fireworks for the VFW-sponsored fireworks display on July 3.
The next regular session of the Enon Village Council is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 14. All regular sessions of village council are held in council chambers in the Enon Government Center, located at 363 E. Main St.
