The coaches put their student-athletes through hours of preseason basketball practices, and in many cases team tryouts as well, are all for one reason — To make their respective high school teams into being the best they can be. Well, the 10 area schools are hoping that hard work has paid off as the 2015-‘16 girls high school basketball season begins tonight.

Six Greene County-area girls high school basketball teams — Beavercreek, Xenia, Fairborn, Yellow Springs, Xenia Christian and Cedarville — will get their seasons under way tonight.

Yellow Springs advanced all the way to the Division IV district semifinals before losing to eventual regional runner up Fayetteville Perry. They defeated Cedarville and Xenia Christian along the way, last season. The Bulldogs will host West Carrollton in a non-league matchup.

Beavercreek and Fairborn both got as far as the district quarterfinals before bowing out in their Division I post season tournament games. Xenia struggled for much of the season and lost its opening round match in DI, but the Buccaneers look to improve on last season’s five-win showing this time around.

Beavercreek plays host to Miamisburg in a Greater Western Ohio Conference crossover meeting. Fairborn hits the road for a non-league contest at Riverside Stebbins.

Xenia opens up at home Friday against Springfield Shawnee, and then they’ll host Greeneview — the Greene County area’s most successful team a year ago — on Saturday.

Greeneview advanced all the way to the Division III regional final before bowing out to Versailles. The Rams finished last season with a 24-4 record, easily tops in the area.

Cedarville and Xenia Christian both have their season openers Friday on the road. The Indians head east to battle London Madison Plains, while the Ambassadors are up north against Sidney Lehman Catholic.

Aside from the earlier mentioned 1 p.m. Greeneview-Xenia matchup, Greenon will also play at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Knights debut on the road against Jefferson Township.

Carroll opens its season on Sunday in Reynoldsburg at the annual Gary West Memorial Tip-Off Classic. The Patriots will play in the third day of the event with a 1:45 p.m. varsity contest (JV plays at noon) against perennial small-school powerhouse Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown.

Bellbrook, a team that made it to the Division I district quarterfinals a year ago, opens its season on Monday against Southwestern Buckeye League, Southwestern Division foe Brookville. Two other local games of interest will also take place on Monday: Beavercreek will play at Xenia, and Fairborn will host Clayton Northmont.
