Norman sets American record
DOHA, Qatar — Xenia Christian senior Grace Norman set a new American record for the women’s paralympic T-44 (below knee amputee) category in the 400-meter run, by finishing third at the IPC Athletics World Championships at Suhaim Bin Hamad Stadium.
Marie-Amelie Le Fur of France won the event in a world-record time of 59.30 seconds, becoming the first female T-44 athlete to break the one-minute mark in the event. Former world record holder Irmgard Bensusan of Germany placed second in 1:03.27 with Norman taking the bronze medal with a time of 1:03.83.
Norman’s previous best time was 1:03.99. The previous world mark had been 1:01.00 set by Irmgard.

“We actually arrived at the track before the sun had set so we could finish practice with enough time to watch some of the competition. Grace had the opportunity to work with Coach Connie Moore on her 3-point start. She feels ready for the race tomorrow, and is already starting to feel a little bit of the nerves. ‘It’s just another 400 meter race. Same track size, same start and finish! Thanks be to God for the opportunity to be here on this day and RACE!’

COLLEGE
Cedarville No. 1 seed in G-MAC Men’s Soccer Championship
CEDARVILLE — Two-time defending champion Cedarville University is the No. 1 seed in the six-team Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championship.
The Yellow Jackets, 13-3-1 overall and 10-2 G-MAC, earned a first-round bye and will host the tournament semifinals on Nov. 5 and the final on Nov. 7.
The event gets under way Saturday with a pair of quarterfinal contests.
No. 5 Trevecca Nazarene (7-9, 5-7 G-MAC) travels to No. 4 Ohio Valley (8-7-1, 6-5-1 G-MAC) with kickoff at noon EDT.
No. 6 Davis & Elkins (6-8-2, 4-6-2 G-MAC) heads to No. 3 Salem International (9-7-1, 7-5 G-MAC) at 2 p.m.
On Nov. 5, Cedarville will host the Trevecca/Ohio Valley winner at 5 p.m. No. 2 seed Alderson Broaddus (10-6-1, 7-5 G-MAC) awaits the Davis & Elkins/Salem International winner at 7:30 p.m.
The Nov. 7 championship match will begin at 1 p.m. EST
The tournament champion does not receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. All Division II men’s soccer bids are at-large selections.
Yellow Jackets womens soccer seeded fourth
CEDARVILLE — No. 4 seed Cedarville and No. 5 Trevecca Nazarene will tangle for the third time this season when they meet Saturday in the quarterfinals of the G-MAC Tournament.
Game time in Cedarville is set for 2 p.m. EDT.
The Lady Jackets, who finished the conference ledger at 7-3-4, enter the match at 10-4-4 overall. The Trojans ended their regular season 9-6-3 and 7-5-2 G-MAC.
Nothing was settled in the first two meetings between the two schools as each game was a 1-1 draw. Both times, TNU scored first forcing Cedarville to equalize.
No. 1 seed Davis & Elkins will host the semifinals and final on Nov. 5-7. The women’s tournament champion earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
TRYOUTS
Magic Volleyball tryouts are set
The Magic Volleyball Club will hold a series of tryouts for its girls volleyball teams.
The first is starting for players 14 years of age and 13-year-olds capable of playing up to 14s. That tryout is set for 5:30-8 p.m., Oct. 31 at St. Helen’s School, 5086 Burkhart Road in Dayton. A second tryout will take place from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 1 at St. Helen’s.
Tryouts for 15-year-olds are from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 15 at St. Helen’s, and from 6-7:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Xenia Community Center, 1204 W. 2nd Street, in Xenia.
A pair of tryouts for players 16 and 17 years of age are set for 1-3:30 p.m. Nov. 15 at St. Helen’s, and 7:30-9 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Xenia Community Center.
There will be a $10 tryout fee, cash only.
The Magic Volleyball Club is based out of Beavercreek.
WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL
Jr. Minuteman team to take on Clark Co. Sheriff’s Department
ENON — The Jr. Minuteman wheelchair basketball team will play a special fundraiser basketball game, Nov. 6 at Indian Valley Middle School, against members of the Clark County Sheriff’s Department. Donations will be accepted at the door, and there will be baked goods on sale and a gift basket auction at halftime. Proceeds will help the Miami Valley Adapted Sports organization. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.

Bev Sword’s Turkey Trot set for Thanksgiving Day
JAMESTOWN — The Silvercreek Township Fire Department will hold its annual 5-kilometer run on Thanksgiving morning. Funds from the Bev Sword’s Turkey Trot event will not only help enable the fire department to provide services for the Jamestown area, but this year the funds will also help create a college fund for Dylan Swisher, the nephew of Bev Sword.
Bev Sword, an Emergency Medical Services Captain who passed away in July, often led the fundraising effort. The fire department is asking area businesses to help sponsor the event. All proceeds from this year’s run will go to the Dylan Swisher College Fund.
Entry fee is $30, which includes a free T-Shirt if you register before Nov. 1. The event will start at 9 a.m. at Seaman Park in Jamestown, next to Greeneview High School.

Beavercreek offering four fitness classes
BEAVERCREEK — The City of Beavercreek Parks, Recreation and Culture Department is offering a Fat Blaster Boot Camp, Yoga, Piyo (Pilates, Yoga, Dance) and Pilates classes for the fall and winter months. Classes will be held at C.I. Beaver Hall, 3696 Highmont St., in Beavercreek.
The Fat Buster Boot Camp runs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m., with one session running from Oct. 19-Nov. 20, and another running Dec. 7-Jan.22 (closed 12/21 and 1/1). Cost is $70 for residents; $80 for non-residents.
Yoga classes will be offered Mondays from 6:15-7:15 p.m. Oct. 26-Nov. 23, Dec. 7-Jan.11, and Jan. 25-Feb. 22; and Thursdays at the same times Oct. 29-Dec. 3, and Jan. 27-Feb. 25. Cost is $45 residents; $52 non-residents.
Piyo runs Tuesdays from 6-7 p.m. Oct. 20-Nov. 17, Dec. 8-Jan. 12, and Jan. 26-Feb. 23 Cost is also $45 for residents; $52 non-residents.
Pilates classes will take place at 6:15-7:15 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 28-Nov. 25, Dec. 9-Jan. 13, and Jan. 27-Feb. 24. Residents pay $45; non-residents $52.
