Numbers, optimism up in ‘Creek

BEAVERCREEK — Optimism abounds in Beavercreek.

Football numbers are as large as they have been for some time, with 120 in the program from grades 9-12. The creates tremendous depth which has helped the team look good early.

“I feel really good right now,” Coach Nic Black said. “We’ve had a fabulous offseason.”

In addition to the roster upgrades numbers-wise, the team has enjoyed some facilities upgrades as well.

From May 2015 to the present time, Black said the changes have been “dramatic.”

OFFENSE

Efficient and aggressive off the ball. That’s how Black wants his offense to play this season. Keys will be taking care of the ball and being quick off the ball at the line of scrimmage.

“You’ve got to play fast on offense now-a-days,” Black said.

The Beavers will have plenty of speed and power with senior running backs Stone Kincer and Tim Bradshaw and junior Justin Terrell. Hunter Maloney returns to quarterback the Beavers.

The Beavers will stick to the basics and depend on a solid ground game with some passing sprinkled in here and there. Black wants his team to be able to run six or seven plays well when they want to run them.

DEFENSE

Last season was a learning experience for the Beavers as they switched from a 50 defense to a 4-4 under front.

Huh?

That’s probably how some of the players reacted as well as they tried to understand the new system. In 2015 Coach Nic Black’s squad is much more comfortable with what is expected of them.

“We can have a conversation about what we need to do,” Black said. “They understand so much better. It makes everything better.” The strength will be senior linebackers Danny Holstein, Alex Bush and Caleb Boone and junior Jackson Knipper.

A lot will be expected of the defensive line, which will be tasked with getting off the snap quickly and getting to the ball

SPECIAL TEAMS

Michael Chuck returns to handle placekicking duties while Jackson Hansen will be the punter. Both had solid seasons in 2014.

Like always, Black wants to win the border series games with Carroll, Fairborn and Fairmont. The Beavers travel to Columbus Sept. 25 for a battle with Bishop Hartley, which was 11-3 and made it to the Division V state semifinal.

“We’re going to learn how to win,” Black said.
