Yellow Jackets earn G-MAC weekly awards

CEDARVILLE — Four Cedarville University student athletes were recognized by the Great Midwest Athletic Conference as Players of the Week in their respective sports.

Softball’s Brianne O’Dell, women’s tennis player Janelle English, baseball player Colton Potter, and men’s tennis player Ryan Shomo received G-MAC recognition Wednesday.

Cedarville junior O’Dell is the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week for games played on March 6-12.

An infielder/outfielder from Goshen, Ind., she batted .405 with five doubles, three home runs, and 13 RBI.

In 12 games played, O’Dell tallied 15 hits in 37 at-bats, scoring eight runs and posting a .784 slugging percentage. She walked twice and added a sacrifice fly.

She registered five multi-hit games including four hits in a 14-6 victory against Quincy with a homer and four RBI.

O’Dell is hitting .442 this season and raised her career batting average to .385. She has started all 129 games in which she’s played.

The Lady Jackets (6-10) are slated to host Urbana in their home opener at 3 p.m. on March 21.

The G-MAC has chosen English as the Athlete of the Week in women’s tennis.

A freshman from Morgantown, W.Va., she helped lead the Lady Jackets to a 3-1 performance in Florida.

English won all four of her singles matches — three at the No. 3 position and another in the No. 2 slot.

She had a 3-1 mark in doubles seeing action in all three positions.

For the season, English is 9-2 in singles with a nine-match winning streak. She is 7-4 in doubles.

Cedarville (7-4) returns to action at 4 p.m. on March 24 by hosting Alderson Broaddus in the G-MAC opener. EDT.

Potter, a Yellow Jacket outfielder, has been selected the G-MAC Baseball Player of the Week.

The six-foot product of Jersey Shore, Pa. batted a torrid .652 in five games with two doubles, six RBI, and a .739 slugging percentage.

Potter hit safely in all five games by going 15-for-23 at the plate and scoring six runs. He stole three bases, walked once, and did not strikeout.

He is batting an even .500 for the season with hits in nine-of-10 contests.

Potter already has seven multi-hit games including a pair of four-hit performances and a three-hit effort.

Cedarville (2-8) is scheduled to play a three-game series on March 17-18 at Oakland City (Ind.).

Shomo is the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week in men’s tennis for matches played on March 6-12.

The senior from Marshalltown, Iowa went 4-0 in singles and 3-1 in doubles as the Yellow Jackets split four matches in Florida.

Shomo won all three of his No. 3 singles matches in straight sets.

He went 1-1 at No. 3 doubles with teammate Jeremy Hoover and was 2-0 at the No. 2 spot alongside Joel Clark.

Shomo sports a 6-6 singles record this season and is 43-32 for his career. He’s also 6-6 in doubles competition during the campaign.

Cedarville (5-7) returns to action on Tuesday at Tiffin. Match time is set for 4 p.m.
