FAIRBORN — The Fairborn High School tennis team beat the weather Wednesday, Aug. 24, and also finally beat an opponent, topping Springfield Shawnee, 5-0, at Community Park.

“We were very nervous because Shawnee was late arriving and we knew the rains were coming,” Coach Doug Coy said. “I was extremely proud of our girls. They went out and took care of business on the courts. They were anxious to play tonight, and it would have been a big letdown if we hadn’t been able to complete the match. We played hard out there, and as tough as the early season losses were to take, they definitely have prepared us for the GWOC South matches that we have coming up later in the season.”

Acadia Wulf was the first off the court, needling little time to win, 6-0, 6-1, at second singles. Moments later, Shayna Osborne and Preslee Chapman wrapped up a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles. No. 1 singles player Brooklyn Hunter clinched the match, rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 win.

Kyla Secrest won, 6-4, 6-1 at third singles. She took a few games to get going, but once she figured out what she needed to do to win her match, she had little trouble, Coy said.

Megan Koonce and Dakota Thacker had jumped out to a 5-0 lead at second doubles when Shawnee’s girls defaulted the match, giving the Lady Skyhawks the sweep.

“I can’t say enough for how the girls have hung in there through some tough matches, and used the experience to improve their games,” Coy said. “I can honestly say I saw growth in all our girls tonight. Last year this is a match we would have won, but the scores would have been more like 6-4, 6-3 or something along those lines. They lacked that killer instinct to put weaker opponents away. Tonight they went right out and took the match and never gave the Shawnee girls a chance to get going. If we can continue to play like this the rest of the way, we will definitely get our share of wins, and be in position to win the south division, which is one of our top goals.”

Weather permitting, Fairborn was slated to play Thursday at Tipp City Tippecanoe, then Saturday morning to Huber Heights Wayne to make up a rainout from earlier in the season.
