COLUMBUS — The Beavercreek girls bowling squad, who have been to the State tournament for eight years running, took first place on Saturday at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl, defeating Akron Coventry 884-850.

The Beavers, who came into the tournament as the no. 3 seeded team, defeated no. 6 seeded Bowling Green with scores of 158-201-166-173-148 compared to Bowling Green’s 157-141-168-233-126.

After dispatching the no. 2 seeded Austintown-Fitch with a combined score of 870-836 in the second round, they faced Akron Coventry in the finals.

While Akron Coventry came into the tournament as the no. 8 seed, they beat top seeded Centerville and entered the final match hot. Beavercreek won with scores of 144-147-183-255-185 to 184-152-169-203-142.

Beavercreek senior Colleen Hines also placed in the top-ten of the individual competition. She finished 10th with a series of 209-175-210—594.

Xenia freshman bowler Evan Adkins rolled a 248-278-170 — 696 series to finish second overall at the Division I boys state high school bowling championships, last Saturday, at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.

Four of the top five finishing individual bowlers hailed from the Southwest District. Two freshmen claimed the top-2 individual spots in the finishing order: Clayton Northmont’s Steve Kocher earned top honors with a 709 series, followed by Adkins’ 696.

Beavercreek senior Ben Thomas was the Beavers’ top bowler. He finished 18th in the 142-person field with a 612 series.

The Beavercreek boys team finished fourth overall, the highest finish among the Southwest District schools. Wapakoneta won the overall team title over Olmsted Falls in the Championship round final.
