“By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.” (John 5:30)

“By myself I can do nothing.” Really? How do we understand this verse? Certainly the Creator of the Universe can do as He pleases? This is rather puzzling. Or is it? Jesus clearly states here the unity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They are One, and they are God! They work together, not independently. All Jesus did fit into the grand plan of the one true God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. There was no dissent. They were together all the way – all the way to the Cross. All judgment comes from the unity of our God.

Jesus clearly lived a life completely dedicated to the unified plan of God. He desired nothing that would be outside that will and that is how He was sinless. In His prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane He prayed to His Father, “Your will be done.” It was a confirmation of His dedication to the unified plan of our Triune God.

Our prayer, “Your will be done” is also an affirmation that we desire the will of God to be done over our own. It is an affirmation of our total trust in our God, that He knows what is best for us at all times, and that that is what we desire for our lives.

Heavenly Father, we praise You for Your unity as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. You are unified as one God in Your plan for us and those we love. We trust Your will for us. You know best. Your will be done. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
