End of an era

Editor:

An era has ended in Xenia and few people even realize it. More than 43 years ago, an organization known as “CRUISER II” was revitalized - mainly throught the efforts of one Hurricane Smith.

This unit was a group of men deicated to serve voluntarily as Reserve Officers to the Xenia Police Department. Many volunteers came and went through the years. Then, several years ago, it was determined that the Reserves would be phased out, simply by not allowing new members to join.

Beginning this year, there were only two Reserve Members left standing — my husband, Marty Murphy, and Rich Jackson. Marty just retired with 43 years of service. I don’t know how many years Rich had in, but it was a long length of time also.

These guys might only have been “Reserve Officers,” but they were the same as the “regular” offciers in every way - except they did their jobs voluntarily.

Marty was Captain of the Reserves for many years. Some of “Xenia’s Finest” came from the ranks of the Reserves.

Though he was not ready to leave yet, medical issues made it necessary for Marty to resign. Then, with only one man left - Rich - the Reserves were offcially dissolved.

The last 43 years have left us with many memories - some good - some bad. The most vivid, of course, being the 1974 Xenia tornado. Marty spent days weaving his way through piles of rubble and destruction on his Harley, doing whatever was necessary - going places where the emergency vehicles couldn’t get to.

On the fun side, he was the escort for Pat Felton on her “Talk to the Mayor” public appearances. He even got her on the Harley a few times!

So Marty and Rich are the end of an “Era.” As they had no “offical recognition” of their service to our community, I cannot let their years of dedication to our city go unnoticed. Therefore, I am taking the liberty of speaking on behalf of the citizens of Xenia, and myself, when I say “thank you.” Thank you for your service and God Speed in your future endeavors. — Shirley Murphy, Xenia
