NELSONVILLE, Ohio — By day, Miki Brooks serves as vice president of the Nelsonville Chamber of Commerce. But by night, she’s taking over a special task that she hopes will add a little extra magic for the children of the area.

Brooks is volunteering her time to respond to each and every letter left for Jolly Old St. Nick at “Santa’s Post Office,” a new addition to the decorations at North Pole Nelsonville on the Public Square.

So far, two little boys have dropped off their lists at the office, where animated elves can be seen inside processing the letters. Brooks hopes for more letters.

“It’s really cute,” Brooks said. “It’s the small things in life that give me pleasure.”

Adding Santa’s post office to the Christmas scenery on the Square has been on the chamber’s wish list for some time. Their opportunity finally came this year when organizers rearranged a few of the little houses and had an extra one to decorate.

In the two letters she received, both boys, who were brothers, said they’ve been good and would like things like a dirt bike, a four-wheeler, monster trucks and educational games. Santa, by way of Brooks, responded by congratulating the two boys for being kind to one another. She also wrote that Santa would do his best to fit everything they asked into the sack.

“I wrote that I’d do the best I could,” Brooks said with a laugh.

Ever since the tradition of North Pole Nelsonville began six years ago, Brooks and her fellow chamber members have always hoped the attraction would bring more people to the square to enjoy the scenery and the storefront displays.

“The vision behind it has always been to create a magical Christmas experience for children and adults.”
