FAIRBORN — The Ohio Volkssport Association’s (OVA) Sweet Corn Festival Walk is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 16 with start times from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. with everyone finishing by 3 p.m. The start and finish will be in Shelter #4 in Community Park, 691 East Dayton-Yellow Springs Road.
Everyone is invited to walk at this free event. There is a $3 fee for those who would like stamps in their Event and Kilometer Books.
Volkswalking, founded in Germany in the 1970s and brought to the USA by GIs, is an organized walk and open to everyone. Participants go at their own pace - jogging, running or walking - following a premarked trail and it’s non-competitive. Everyone who finishes is a winner. Each participant must register, sign a waiver of liability and carry a Start Card which will be punched at checkpoints on the trails and then returned to OVA at the finish.
The trail for the Sweet Corn Festival Volkswalk will include dirt and paved paths in Community Park and surrounding neighborhoods. Both the 5K and 10K trails are rated 2A, and both go through Fairborn neighborhoods. Trail rating is for one steep hill at the start and a few other moderate hills. Trail is suitable for wheelchairs, wagons and strollers. The 10K trail qualifies for the OVA’s Buckeye Trail Program.
Pets on leashes are welcome but owners must clean up after them. Water and restrooms are located along the trail.
