FAIRBORN — More than 135 years ago, J. Sterling Morton had an idea to set aside a special day just to plant trees. We now refer to this day as Arbor Day and continue the tradition of planting trees and extending the activity into a week.

The City of Fairborn Parks and Recreation Division has a number of activities to keep our green spaces green that require only a few hours. Citizens who wish to participate can help by bringing their shovel and gloves and arriving at any of the activities at the stated time.

The activities beginning next week include planting trees at Wright Brothers Huffman Prairie Bikeway from 4-6 p.m. both Monday, April 28 and Tuesday, April 29. Residents will meet across the street in Skyway Plaza.

Garden and path preparation at the Mercer Smith House will take place from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, April 30 at the corner of Middle and First Streets.

Honeysuckle removal will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, May 3 at Community Park. Volunteers should wear long pants, closed shoes, and gloves. They will meet at the Atherton Shelter in Community Park.
