XENIA — A Fairborn man, who scalped a section of his infant son’s head last June, was sentenced to four years in prison Thursday.
According to court officials, Kodi Weatherspoon pleaded guilty to two counts of felonious assault and one count of child endangering Feb. 20 as part of a plea agreement entered with the Greene County Common Pleas Court. He was facing 16 and a half years in prison as well as a $31,000 fine.
Fairborn police and medics were dispatched to Weatherspoon’s Duncan Drive apartment June 5, 2013, following a 9-1-1 call in which he told dispatchers, “I need an ambulance out here, I got a hurt baby…I’m so sorry…me and my wife we got into a little argument and the baby got hurt.”
At the scene, police found Shunta Darlene Weatherspoon holding the one-month-old boy. According to the official report, there was blood throughout the apartment and police observed a large portion of the baby’s scalp missing.
“Ms. Weatherspoon continued to advise that she believed her husband had pulled their child’s scalp off by pulling the infant’s hair as he was trying to pull hers,” the reporting officer wrote.
The child was transported to Children’s Medical Center where he underwent surgery due to his injury. The mother was treated at the scene and then taken to Miami Valley Hospital.
A temporary protection order filed against Weatherspoon, prohibiting him from having contact with his wife and son, was terminated through the Fairborn Municipal Court Thursday.
