The verse of the day is Psalm 91:4. “He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”
I remember when I was a child going on a vacation to Cape Cod with my family - grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Every morning all the cousins would run and jump into Grandma & Grandpa Thomson’s bed where Grandpa would tell us stories. I can still hear him making clucking noises in the back of his throat as he told the story of the young girl who had a little red hen for a pet. She loved that hen and experienced great delight in watching and caring for her.
She was so pleased when one day Henny’s eggs hatched and produced eight fluffy yellow chicks. She greatly enjoyed watching them scurry around the yard searching for bugs and cracked corn.
Early one morning the girl awoke to the acrid smell of smoke wafting through the window. She looked out with horror to see what was left of the big red barn - nothing but a pile of ashes and smoking timber. She ran out, wildly calling for her little hen, but she was nowhere to be seen.
As she searched through the rubble, she came across the burned body of Henny who had been locked in the barn. In her grief she reached down to pick up what remained of her feathered pet. To her surprise, from under the burned body scattered all eight of the yellow chicks. During the terrible night, the mother hen had clucked to her chicks, calling them under the safety of her wings. She had perished in the fire, but in doing so had saved the lives of her babies.
As I listened to my grandpa tell this story while being safely tucked into the bed with all my cousins, I felt a snug and sheltered feeling that was very comforting. I believe this kind of protection is what the Psalmist was thinking of when he said that God will cover us with His feathers, and under His wings we can find refuge.
The writer must have known and experienced that safe and secure place in the storms of his life. That peaceful place is available for us, too. Wherever you are and whatever you are going through, you have a safe haven under the protective wings of our heavenly Father. — Love Mama
