Several years ago, a Kentucky newspaper reported on a serious problem in Taylor County (in central Kentucky). Thieves stole street signs left and right, creating potential disasters for motorists.

Stop signs, road markers, street names, railroad crossings, school zone signs – nothing was off limits to the thieves. Law enforcement officers tried everything without success.

The crimes were punishable with fines and jail time, but the sign-grabbers were hard to catch. They did their work quickly in the darkness of night and drove off.

Officials tried posting the signs higher and bolting them onto posts with reinforced backing, but nothing seemed to help. They even had an amnesty program where stolen signs could be dropped off, no questions asked. That wasn’t successful either.

The police chief put his finger on the real issue when he simply told the newspaper: “People should be honest and not take them.”

That really is the answer to a lot of society’s problems. It’s the answer to many of our own predicaments, too.

Since we are responsible for our own actions, try honesty. It’s a characteristic for people of any and all generations. Honesty is still the best policy.
