YELLOW SPRINGS — Antioch College’s newly renovated 44,000‐square‐foot wellness center will officially open to the Yellow Springs community Sept. 6.

To commemorate the opening, the college will host a grand opening community celebration 12-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6. A dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting are scheduled for noon.

The community is invited to come together for a day of celebration, including activities such as basketball, volleyball, pickleball and tennis, as well as cuisine from several area food trucks. Center memberships will be available for purchase during the event.

The wellness center, formerly known as the Curl Gymnasium, recently completed a $7.8 million renovation, which began June 2013. The original gym dates back to 1929. Contractors have rehabbed or reconfigured the facility, preserving historic architectural elements of the building while upgrading it for improved functionality and energy use.

The center will be a resource for students, faculty, staff and the wider Yellow Springs community. It will serve as the campus venue in which students and citizens alike can engage in behaviors that promote health, personal growth and an enhanced quality of life.

“The Wellness Center will be a place for the college and the community to focus on fitness and health in a truly beautiful and inspiring environment,” said wellness center Executive Director Monica Hasek.

The center will offer a wide range of classes. Programs will include: group fitness, mind/body classes such as mindfulness meditation, martial arts and yoga, intramural and club sports, aquatic fitness, swimming and tennis lessons, personal training, special events, educational programing and lectures on health-related topics and holistic approaches and outdoor expeditions.

The wellness center features the following amenities: A six‐lane, regulation‐length indoor swimming pool made cleaner and greener with a UV filtration system; a large therapeutic whirlpool; a fully equipped fitness room with state‐of‐the‐art cardio equipment, strength machines, weight‐lifting equipment and a walking track; indoor courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton and pickleball; studio spaces for group fitness classes, martial arts, yoga and more; two racquetball courts; six outdoor tennis courts; large multi‐use space for special events, lectures, conferences, retreats and performances; lounge and patio spaces for gathering and a healthy snack bar.

The center is the college’s third renovation project since it reopened in the fall of 2011.
