XENIA — Xenia mayor Marsha Bayless presented a proclamation Thursday, March 20, in honor of World Down Syndrome Day.


In her proclamation, Bayless stated that March 21, 2014, marked the ninth anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day.


“Each year, the voice of people with Down Syndrome, and those who live and work with them grows louder,” Bayless said.


The date is chosen as 3/21, symbolizing the third copy of the 21st chromosome in people with Down Syndrome. World Down Syndrome Day marks global awareness and is officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.


“Down Syndrome is a naturally occurring chromosomal arrangement that has always been part of the human condition, being universally present across racial, gender or socio-economic lines,” Bayless stated in the proclamation, adding that, as the City of Xenia values all people and supports World Down Syndrome Day.
