FAIRBORN — The Fairborn City Schools Student Ambassadors are giving back to the district educators by recognizing the “Teacher of the Week.”

The 12 ambassadors are now accepting nominations from students at Fairborn Intermediate, Baker Middle and Fairborn High schools. Students can also nominate a teacher from the Wright Campus/Fairborn Primary School. Nomination forms will be in the main office of each school.

“The ambassadors come up with creative ways to show school pride and spirit, and this is a great one,” said Student Ambassador program advisor Pam Gayheart.

The Student Ambassador program started two years ago to appoint student-leaders who represent the Fairborn City Schools in the community and in the school district. Students in grades 4-12 are eligible to apply in the spring and four ambassadors are chosen per grade level. Meetings are held bi-weekly and the ambassadors work together on community service projects and leadership development.

The “Teacher of the Week” nominations are read during the student ambassador meetings and the teachers to be recognized are chosen. The ambassadors will be taking applications through the end of the school year and they will be doing the program again next year.

“The teachers get a certificate, a roll of Sweet Tarts and a surprise visit from the ambassadors at their school and a photograph we will be sending to the newspaper,” Gayheart said. “At each school we will be decorating a bulletin board where we will hang the teacher’s photo for the week.”

This week the student ambassadors recognize Fairborn Intermediate School Physical Education teacher Betsy Burns. She was nominated by Fairborn Intermediate fifth grade student ambassador Danielle Osborne.

“I think that Mrs. Burns should be ‘Teacher of the Week’ because she is very fun, kind, helpful and energetic. She also wants kids to be active and healthy,” Osbourne wrote. “She is an energetic person because she will jump rope, run and do fun activities in P.E. She is fun because she does cup stacking and dances. Mrs. Burns is kind because she doesn’t like to have kids be left out or be excluded. She is helpful because if a kid isn’t doing so well in an activity she will help them figure it out.”

Osborne listed Jump Rope for the Heart, cup stacking, fitness challenge and kangaroo club as some of the fun activities Burns incorporates into PE. Burns also helps with the school’s student council.
