Greene County auditor warns of tax scams

XENIA — Greene County Auditor David Graham is warning residents about scam calls relating to tax collections.

“I have received two phone calls from constituents stating they have received a phone call from someone identifying themselves as David Graham,” Graham wrote in an email Friday. “He indicates that they have past due taxes that need to be made current. In one case he tried to meet with the individual requesting they bring the money with them.”

Graham said Friday that his office will never call to try to collect delinquent taxes.

“That’s just not what we do,” he said. “… My office doesn’t collect taxes. The treasurer’s office collects taxes.”

Graham advised those receiving suspicious calls to contact the office the caller says they are representing to determine the call’s legitimacy.

“Don’t just trust it because you got the phone call,” he said. “Follow up with the office like these two people have done, so you get the story straight.”
