MVDC scores big during competition

FAIRBORN — The Miami Valley Dance Center’s (MVDC) Dance Force attended the Masquerade National Dance Competition at the Dayton Convention Center in early March, in which more than 270 dance performances from several dance studios were evaluated individually and scored in several categories including technique and stage presence.

Various dance styles and age groups were then combined for overall placement. Competing in Jazz, Lyrical, Tap, Contemporary, Hip-Hop, and Production, the MVDC Dance Force stood above the competition, according to MVDC.

MVDC’s Sapphire Jazz took home a platinum, was the top scoring junior gold large group/line and received a call back for the encore performance for their performance of “Blame it on the Boogie.” Sapphire Lyrical’s “Corner” garnered a high gold and was the second overall junior gold large group/line while “TNMT” by Sapphire Hip Hop netted a high gold and second overall high score petite/junior gold small group. “Summertime Blues” by Sapphire Tap rounded out the day with another high gold and the third overall high score petite/junior gold small groups.

“All through the Night” from Emerald Lyrical received a platinum, a judge’s choice award, an audience choice award and was named the top scoring teen purple small group. Emerald Contemporary grabbed a platinum for “Tides of the Moon” and was the top scoring senior purple small/large groups. The Emerald Hip Hop dancers’ “Women in Business” secured a platinum, was an audience choice nominee and placed second overall in the senior purple small/large groups at masquerade. In addition, Lyrical, Contemporary and Hip Hop were nominated for the Industry Dance Awards. “Bring Me to Life” by Emerald Jazz received a platinum and was the third overall teen purple small group while Emerald Tap’s “Work” took home a high gold.

Diamond Tap’s “XOXO” and “Primitive” by Diamond Jazz both received platinums and were audience choice award nominees. “Love Save the Empty” by Diamond Lyrical also captured a platinum. The MVDC Dance Force Production number “Spy vs. Spy” scored a platinum, was the top scoring teen purple large group/line and won the masquerade video of the week.

To top off the weekend, Miami Valley Dance Center received the “Class Act” special judges award and was recognized as the top scoring studio.

MVDC Dance Force soloists and duet competitors captured special judge’s awards and high point placements at masquerade. Jack Cerminaro won the teen mr. masquerade title and was the top scoring teen purple soloist for his contemporary dance to “A Fine Frenzy.” “Roar” from Alivia Accurso was named the top scoring teen gold solo and earlier in the competition the Cerminaro/Accurso duet to “Superstitious” received the top scoring teen gold duo/trio. Kendal Fahl and McKenna Wagers performed together to “What is This Feeling” and placed second overall in junior gold duo/trio.

Julia Stultz’s “A-Flat” tap number placed 2nd overall junior gold solos while Grant Shaffer took home third overall teen purple solo with “Walking in Memphis.” “Obsolete” by Christina Ross received a special judge’s award and was the fourth overall senior purple solos while Erin McCoy’s “Without a Word” placed fifth overall in senior purple solos. In addition Jack Cerminaro, Erin McCoy and Christina Ross were selected to join the Masquerade Parade of Stars and were invited to perform in the opening number at the National Finals Competition this summer.

“Way to go Dance Force,” MVDC Director Kelly Fuller said. “I am so proud of each and every one of our team members, choreographers and rehearsal coaches. Not to mention the fantastic support we get from our Dance Force Parents.”
