AAA: high volume of traveling expected

GREENE COUNTY — The upcoming long weekend signifies remembrance of fallen military service members to some, the unofficial start to the summer season to others and an opportunity to take advantage of the additional day off work and get out of town to travelers.

In fact, AAA is estimating that this weekend will see the highest volume of travelers since 2005. More than 1.5 million Ohio citizens are expected to travel over the weekend; 1.4 million of them are expected to be taking road trips. This is an increase compared to last year of 2.2 percent.

AAA Public Affairs Manager Cindy Antrican advises travelers to be patient on the road and mindful of vehicle conditions.

In consideration of what AAA was called to the rescue for in many scenarios last year, it is encouraging drivers to first undergo routine maintenance for their vehicles before hitting the road. Across the nation, it assisted more than 330,000 travelers last year primarily for locking their keys inside their vehicle, having a flat tire and experiencing a dead battery.

Within the Miami Valley, AAA rescued 2,000 stranded travelers with most of them facing issues concerning a dead car battery. Statistically, the second most-needed reason for calling AAA to action required a tow. AAA said requiring a tow indicates a more serious problem with the vehicle.

Gas prices have jumped just in time for those planning to travel — AAA reports that Ohio had the biggest gas price increase across the nation this week, with a 10 cent increase just this week. It said the Miami Valley is currently seeing an average gas price of $2.39, which is 11 cents higher compared to last week’s gas prices.
