YELLOW SPRINGS — The Art House-Hop is aimed to highlight art that has been collected by Yellow Springs locals.

The annual self-guided tour is slated to take place noon-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, featuring eight homes that will open up to guests to display their art exhibits.

One stop includes the home of Antioch College President Dr. Tom Manley and his wife, Susanne Hashim.

“The art objects we choose to live among inspire us on many levels,” Hashim said. “They brighten our lives, give pause for reflection and connect us to friends, family, memories and moments.”

As part of the event, Manley and Hashim will be welcoming House-Hop guests into their home to see their collection of fine art, craft and design pieces. Hashim said the art in their home is primarily Pacific Northwest and California artists, with some international accents.

The Art House-Hop is described as a relaxed way to see beautiful art in private collections that individuals might not have a chance to see otherwise by Yellow Springs Arts Council officials, who annually hosts the event. The event serves as a fundraiser for the organization.

This year’s other stops range from local artists, national artists, international artists to a historical art collection featuring work by “The Father of Native American Printmaking” Woody Crumbo and work by other artists from the Dorothy Dunn Indian School Art Studio. Dunn’s controversial art studio started in 1932 in Santa Fe. Her students’ work came to represent a new Indian art.

In one home, the art is on the walls and in the everyday items used by the hosts. It’s in the hand-crafted stained glass, light fixtures, quilts and the handmade furniture — even the mail and egg boxes were created by local artists.

“One of the reasons we enjoy living with art is [because] it connects us to others and the world,” said Hashim.

YSAC officials said the most common feedback it receives from previous House-Hop guests is the friendly welcome and the joy the hosts express in sharing their art.

As the event is a self guided tour, guests can go to any collector’s home on the tour, in any order they want. A car or bike is suggested, as the homes are scattered throughout Yellow Springs.

Tickets are $15; children through age 12 are free. Starting Aug. 6, purchase tickets online with a credit card at http://www.ysartscouncil.org/event/art-house-hop/

If tickets are purchased before Sept. 3, participants will be able to pick up the event’s map from 1-4 p.m. during open gallery hours at the YSAC Gallery, 111 Corry St. Individuals can also pick tickets up on Sept. 3 from noon-4 p.m.

Participants who purchase a ticket to the Art House Hop will receive a brochure with a description of each collection, addresses and a map.
