HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Drew Brads of Xenia won three national titles Sunday at the 2015 Rubik’s Cube U.S. Nationals in Hilton Head, S.C.

Brads, 15, won the top title on the 3×3 (regular) Rubik’s Cube, the Pyraminx, and the Skewb. He solved the Pyraminx in 1.68 seconds to set a new North American record for a single-solve of that puzzle, breaking the old record of 1.71 seconds, which he set in 2013. He is also the world record holder for the Pyraminx, with an average solve time of 2.56 seconds, a record he set at an official competition in October 2014.

Brads, a sophomore at Xenia Christian High School, was the 2013 and 2014 Pyraminx world champion but had never been on the podium for the 3×3 Rubik’s Cube in a national or world competition. His goal was to be in the top 3 for the 3×3 Rubik’s Cube, and he surprised himself when he won the event today with an average solve time of 8.33 seconds.

“It feels insane,” he said. “I can’t believe I actually did it. I won by just .01 (seconds).”

Brads was the favorite to win the Pyraminx, and he did that handily with an average solve time of 3.04 seconds, more than a second ahead of second-place finisher Alex Maass. His winning average on the Skewb was 4.29 seconds, according to the Rubik’s Cube Nationals official results page — http://www.cubingusa.com/usnationals2015/results/live.php?compid=154.
