FAIRBORN — Buckeye Discount Cleaners are bringing their green approach to dry cleaning to Fairborn in hopes of saving more customers some “green” as well.
John Blair and Luanne Handley-Blair of Beavercreek both previously worked at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and John is a veteran. When they were on an assignment in Washington, D.C. for several years they began to notice a trend in discount dry cleaning.
“We noticed that dry cleaning was really cheap there because of the high commuter population, but the quality wasn’t that consistent,” Luanne Blair said. “When we returned to Dayton in 2011, we were shocked by dry cleaning prices. We thought a discount dry cleaners might work in Dayton, but, with top quality.”
From that idea, Buckeye Discount Dry Cleaners was born. The former Ohio State University attendees opened their Beavercreek plant in late 2011 with the logo “Making Affordable Quality,” and a familiar scarlet and gray theme.
The Blairs strive to maintain the latest and best technology and equipment at the plant, and were recently selected as a Certified Green Business by the Dayton Regional Green III in partnership with the University of Dayton.
“We’re the only green certified dry cleaner in Dayton,” said Blair. “The equipment we use, as well as the solvents and additives, are the most environmentally friendly and the least destructive. Also, any waste is sent to be properly disposed of.”
Buckeye Discount Cleaners celebrated the grand opening of their new drop store at 31 South Central Ave. in Fairborn, where customers can drop off and pick up dry cleaning.
“We realized there is definitely a market for high quality dry cleaning there with it’s proximity to the base,” said Blair. “We want to bring a quality product to people at an affordable price. We offer the lowest ever-day prices in the northern Dayton area.”
Store managers Sharon Baxter and Beth Dixon have close to two decades of dry cleaning management experience. Baxter is a Certified Dry Professional dry cleaner (CPD), and Dixon is now completing that training, which is awarded only after passing a four hour test.
“We think if you come visit us you’ll be happy with the quality you. We truly pride ourselves on service and want our customers to be happy,” Blair said. “If we are doing something wrong we want to know so we can correct it. We depend on and encourage that. And that builds customer loyalty.”
The Blairs have gotten away from coupons but have instead the Buckeye Wheel. Customers who spend $25 or more can spin to win from $1 up to $25 off their next bill.
The Buckeye Discount Cleaners plant is located at 2750 North Fairfield Road in Beavercreek and can be reached 937-429-2120. The Fairborn drop store can be reached at 937-878-6006. For more information visit their website at buckeyedry.com.
