HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Cedric Pearl, the long-time offensive coordinator for Alabama A&M, will be the new head football coach at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, footballscoop.com has reported.

In a press release, Central State Director of Athlet ics & Recreation Jahan Culbreath said: “We are excited that Coach Cedric Pearl is a part of the Central State University family, and we look forward to his leadership of the CSU Football program. He is a great addition to our staff as we move toward Marauder Excellence.”

Pearl will replace E.J. Junior, the former University of Alabama All-America linebacker, who was fired in December after a 2-9 season. Junior was hired as head coach at Central State in March 2009.

Pearl spent 13 seasons on the Alabama A&M staff as offensive line coach, with his duties expanded to offensive coordinator in 2007. Prior to coming to Huntsville, he was on Anthony Jones’ staff at Morehouse. Pearl, like most of the A&M staff, was not retained after Jones was fired in November.

He was a three-time All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference offensive lineman at Tuskegee, where he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant. After three seasons at Tuskegee, he became offensive line coach at Morris Brown, where he spent five seasons before going to Morehouse.

Central State was an National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics power in the 1980s and 1990s, winning three national titles. It was coached by Billy Joe, the former American Football League running back whose 243 college wins are second only to Grambling’s Eddie Robinson with Historically Black College and Universities (HBCU) teams, and by Rick Comegy, who was recently fired by Jackson State despite a 55-35 mark in nine years and since hired by Mississippi Valley.

Central State dropped football in 1997 because of financial problems but the program was resurrected in 2005. The Marauders play at the NCAA Division II level in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
